Maik Schmalstich, VIRTU’s COO recently had the honor of presenting at the annual Latin America Day Conference at the Business Association for Latin America in the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg, Germany. Participants of the conference were introduced to VIRTU’s mission to directly connect producers and consumers, while paying a living wage and simultaneously empowering local communities.
Maria Rosa is 11 years old. She lives with her parents and two younger sisters in Bolivia. Her father makes a decent wage working in the dangerous mines - things are tight, but there is always food on the table and the rent is always paid. Maria Rosa can afford the bus fair to school and her mom stays home with the two youngest.
Everything changes in the blink of an eye when there is an accident at the mines.
