Josefina is 16 years old. She lives with her grandmother and two younger siblings, Maria Isabel and Rafael, about two hours by bus from the Dominican Republic’s capital Santo Domingo. Their father left several years ago to find luck in New York. He’d promised to send money home, but that slowly trickled to a stop and they haven’t heard from him in several months.
Inspiration comes in many forms - a drawing, a song, a book, or even a fashion magazine. Sometimes kicking back with a glass of wine and a fashion magazine is exactly what the doctor ordered. Leafing through the pages (on or offline!), soaking up the colors, the designs and the textures makes you feel energized and motivated. Reading articles in a fashion magazine about new sustainable fashion labels, classic styles, DIY tips & tricks and new ethical designers can be the perfect escape for your brain to come back to life feeling ready to charge!
The ETICA Impact fund was designed to give our producers and their communities the control to direct funds into their communities where they need it most. On top of paying a living wage to all our workers, this innovative fund allows us to truly understand what our producers need/want and lets them determine their own path to empowerment. So often people from the outside looking in (who truly mean well!) decide what is best for a community, whether it is deemed a need locally or not. For example, there is no use for school desks if we don’t have a local school. Every community has specific goals, specific problems and specific cultures and we do not pretend to know what is best for them.
Every month we invite you to meet #empowerman. We ask them to tell us about who they are and why they choose VIRTŪ - what we get back is amazing.
This time we meet Ylan (28), a French-German living in Sweden - one of the leading countries in environmental and sustainable causes. We are so proud to have him as part of our #empowerman team.
